Coming from mountain terroirs and a blend of 51% Cabernet Sauvignon and 49% Merlot, the deeply hued 2018 Howell Mountain Hillside Blend offers more masculine notes of blackcurrants, blueberries, scorched earth, chocolate, and gravelly earth. Full-bodied and structured, with ample tannins, it needs 4-5 years of bottle age and will keep for two decades.

The 2018 Hillside Blend (Howell Mountain) is a wild, feral wine. Huge tannins wrap around a core of inky dark red fruit, cedar, game, licorice and tobacco. The tannins are searing and astringent. I can't tell you if this wine technically has smoke taint, but the flavor and tannin profile are those of a wine with issues.
