Score 90/100 · Drink 2001-2009, Robert Parker, Oct 2001

The superior 1999 Aglianico del Vulture La Firma was aged in 50% new oak. It is a modern-styled red that has not lost the typicity of this region of southern Italy known as Basilicata. It offers flamboyant aromas of pepper, earth, black fruits, sausage, and vanillin. Ripe, chewy, forceful, and dense, it should drink well for 7-8 years. Deep, dark ruby. Potent, penetrating aromas of blackberry, blueberry, tar and charcoal. Rich and dense, with powerful, warm flavors of raspberry and creme de mure, complicated by licorice and fennel notes on the back end. A chewy, warm wine with power to spare. The best aglianico del Vulture I've tasted to date.
