Score 96/100 · Robert Parker, Jun 2008

The 2006 Syrah Cinematique Larner Vineyard possesses sensational aromatics, extraordinary, meaty, voluptuous, blackberry fruit, a fleshy texture, and a finish that lasts for 40+ seconds. It is slightly more exotic, nuanced, complex, and flamboyant than the Bien Nacido Syrahs. This cuvee was also co-fermented with 5-7% Viognier, which provides uplift to the aromatics as well as an extra degree of complexity to the bouquet and flavors. What a great story is emerging with the wines of Paul Lato. A Polish immigrant, Lato evolved from an impoverished youngster living in his car trying to gather enough money to make wine, to a cellar rat at the Santa Maria coop. Today, he is an increasingly well-known figure in the Central Coast turning out limited quantities of gorgeously crafted, artisinal wines. Everything about this story is something that could only happen in America, and we should all be proud of what Lato has achieved in such a short period. He is an up-and-coming star, and one only hopes he achieves enough financial success that he can increase the quantities of wine he is making while not diminishing the quality. Paul Lato is a brilliant young man (he also makes fabulous Pinot Noirs, but more on those wines in a later report) who deserves serious attention. Tel.
