Score 92/100 · Drink 2014-2022, Jeb Dunnuck, Wine Advocate, Feb 2014

Slightly more structured, yet similar aromatically, with beautiful kirsch, blackberry, licorice and roasted herbs, the 2004 Chateauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes (90% Grenache and 10% Mourvedre) is medium to full-bodied, focused and nicely concentrated. The most backwards and unevolved of the trio, it’s still drinking nicely and gives up classic Southern Rhone style. Enjoy bottles over the coming 7-8 years. Possessing vines mostly in the eastern section of the appellation (17 hectares), Domaine de la Charbonniere is run by the Maret family, with the two daughters, Caroline and Veronique, now taking more and more responsibility for the domaine. These 2004s were beautiful across the board and show classic Southern Rhone characters. They’re all drinking nicely, and should hold for another 4-5 years.

Deep red. Intensely spicy aromas of strawberry, raspberry and gingerbread. Firm and focused, with precise red fruit and Asian spice flavors, gentle acidity and a long, juicy finish. This is lovely right now.

Meaty, lots of animal flavours – interesting! Great cocktail of flavours and lots of life and animation in the glass. Not the most intense. Tannins just a little stringy. Good honest wine without being a standout. (JR)

Bright red. Ripe, smoky and pungent on the nose, with powerful scents of garrigue, woodsmoke and spicy cherry. Fine-grained and elegant in the mouth, with bright, sharply etched red berry and candied rose flavors. Finishes with a juicy red berry quality, subtle tannins and a hint of dried flowers. Elegant and delicious.
