Score 89/100 · Drink 2001-2011, Robert Parker, Dec 2001
The 1999 Chateauneuf du Pape exhibits a sweet, complex perfume of roasted herbs, mincemeat, black cherry liqueur, pepper, and spice box. It is captivating and ripe, with abundant glycerin and medium to full body. Most of its seductive power is on a superficial level, and it probably will not last more than a decade, but this medium to full-bodied, pure, delicious 1999 is singing beautifully in 2001. Ruby-red. Sappy aromas of kirsch, mint, nuts and vanilla. Then rather cool in the mouth, with moderate flesh and intensity. A '99 with limited ripeness and dimension.
