Tasting notes
Green-tinged gold. Suave tangerine, white peach and honeysuckle aromas are brightened by hints of talc-y minerals and lemon zest. Fleshy but lively and precise, displaying a complex array of citrus, pit fruit and mineral flavors and a touch of iodine. Gains weight and power with air, finishing dry, minerally and very long, with the citrus and floral notes resonating.

Possessing additional minerality, the 2012 l’Avion is 100% Roussanne that was aged in a combination of new and neutral barrels, most being large format. Medium to full-bodied, layered and beautifully pure, it has a terrific bouquet of tangerine, white flowers, buttered citrus and toasted nuts. I’d drink bottles over the coming 2-3 years, but it could certainly have an interesting evolution beyond that as well. This was a fantastic lineup by the team at Stolpman, and the wines are all made by Sashi Moorman. Tel. (805) 688-0400; www.stolpmanvineyards.com
Stolpman's 2012 Roussanne L'Avion is all about polish. Dried pear, spice, mint and floral notes meld together in a restrained, delicate Roussanne endowed with fabulous balance of fruit and acidity. The Avion is Stolpman's top Roussanne and was aged in 100% new French oak barrels, yet it possesses more finesse than the straight Roussanne.
