Tasting notes
I thought the 1995 Zinfandel Old Hill Ranch (865 cases produced from 110-year old vines) to be an outstanding Zinfandel. Although it is the tightest-knit of the Ravenswood offerings, the opaque ruby/purple color, exquisite briery and wild berry-scented nose, full-bodied, powerful flavors, and exceptional purity, texture, and length, all point to a lustrous future for this massive Zin. Give it another 1-2 years of cellaring, and drink it between 1999-2008. Kudos to proprietor Joel Peterson for producing a bevy of Zinfandels that are particularly brilliant in view of the overall quality level that has emerged from this vintage. Tel. (707) 938-1960

Saturated dark-ruby. Bright black raspberry, blackberry and oriental spice aromas, with a complicating note of white pepper. Great sappy sweetness in the mouth; blackberry and maple syrup flavors are enlivened by a suggestion of Tellicherry pepper. Wonderfully integrated acids give this dense, velvety wine great definition. Finishes firm and ripe, with superb freshness. 14.4% alcohol.
