Drunk from magnum, the 1955 Domaine de Chevalier is a terrific wine, exhibiting a deep bouquet of plummy red fruits mingled with notions of coniferous forest floor, boot polish, vine smoke and truffle. Medium to full-bodied, layered and harmonious, it's a deep, concentrated red with beautifully ripe tannins and a long, sapid finish.

Quite deep crimson. A bit oxidised although there is great fruit intensity here. Great weight and sweetness of fruit but low acid and definitely something wrong with it. A shame because there is so much to enjoy in this wine. Unusual (for this domaine) coffee notes too. (JR)
