(80% zinfandel, 17% syrah and 3% mourvedre): Opaque purple. Powerfully scented, alluring bouquet of candied raspberry, blackberry, incense and Asian spices. Silky red and dark berry flavors stain the palate, delivering solid punch without any excess wight. Finishes clean and sweet, with impressive persistence. Trevisan told me that the pH for this wine was "right below 3.4," which is roughly the same as a lively New World pinot noir.

Score 93/100 · Drink 2013-2020, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Aug 2012

As opposed to some of the other Zinfandel based wines here, the 2010 Outsider has darker fruit profile and more textural depth. The 2010 is juicy, inviting and full-bodied all the way through to the seamless finish. This is another gorgeous wine from Linne Calodo. The 2010 is 80% Zinfandel, 17% Syrah and 3% Mourvèdre from Heaton. The 2010 spent 25 days on the skins and was aged in a combination of American and French oak barrels.

Anticipated maturity: 2013-2020. This set of wines from proprietor Matt Trevisan was among the most impressive I tasted in Paso Robles. The wines seem to have a bit more energy and focus than in the past. Native fermentations and a generally artisan, hand-made approach informs a style full of personality and character. Some of the wines are aged partly in American oak, which works beautifully for this fruit. Trevisan describes 2010 as a fairly regular October harvest. He adds that 2011 was a much later year, as 60% of the fruit came in during November. Tel (805) 227-0797, www.linnecalodo.com
