(38% grenache, 32% mourvedre and 30% syrah): Brilliant ruby. Potent black and blue fruit scents are complicated by notes of incense, violet and licorice, with a spicy nuance adding urgency. Sappy, palate-staining blackberry and cherry compote flavors show excellent clarity and depth, picking up a hint of floral pastille with aeration. Finishes smooth, sappy and long, with velvety tannins making a late appearance.

Close to an even split of Grenache, Syrah and Mourvedre, the 2011 Rising Tides also has vibrant, racy acidity that gives lift to sweet black cherry, potpourri, toast and underbrush-driven aromas and flavors. Pure, polished and medium to full-bodied, with impressive purity of fruit, it possesses solid richness and depth, and should evolve gracefully. Drink now-2019. This was a fantastic lineup of wines by proprietor Matt Trevisan and all of the current releases have brilliant purity of fruit and a lively, energetic feel without ever coming across as lean. Blends are the rule here and these are character-filled efforts that could come from nowhere else. Highly recommended. Tel (805) 227-0797; www.linnecalodo.com

Crushed red berries, flowers, mint and spices all waft from the glass in the 2011 Rising Tides. Fragrant and expressive, the 2011 shows the more elegant , polished side of Paso. All the elements come together nicely in the glass. The fragrant, gracious finish is especially appealing.
