Made from 70% Calera clone and 30% Pommard, the 2013 Pinot Noir Ulises Valdez offers up extravagant black raspberry fruit, forest floor and spring flowers in a dark ruby/purple-colored wine that is full-bodied and opulent. This is a stunner, and to me, one of the three strongest of the 2013 Pinots.

The 2013 Pinot Noir Ulises Valdez Vineyard has quite a bit more aromatic lift than most of the other Pinots in this lineup. The fruit expression leans towards the redder end of the spectrum, while underlying saline notes contribute to an impression of freshness that gives the wine much of its chiseled, precise personality. This Ulises Valdez Pinot is a standout.
The 2013 Pinot Noir Ulises Valdez Vineyard is round, dense and silky on the palate. A wine of real texture and depth, the 2013 is one of the more opulent wines in the range. A drop of whole clusters adds a dimension of spiciness that is quite attractive, but there is no shortage of fruit or overall volume. A final blast of blue/purplish fruit and baking spices saturates the palate on the finish.
About the producer
Paul Hobbs is one of California wine’s biggest names. Twice named Wine Personality of the Year by Robert Parker, he joined Robert Mondavi in 1977, worked at Opus One and Simi before setting up his eponymous winery in 1991.
