The 1989 Château Clos de Sarpe is also terrific and certainly stood out in the lineup. Deep ruby/plum-hued, a rocking bouquet of blackcurrants, unsmoked cigar tobacco, sappy herbs, and chocolate all emerge from this ripe, medium to full-bodied, beautifully textured Saint-Emilion. It shows the house style in its concentrated, powerful vibe, yet it's nevertheless elegant, if not even pretty, on the palate. This beautiful wine will evolve gracefully for another 15-20 years or more. Don't let that keep you from opening bottles, though!
