Score 93/100 · Drink 2013-2021, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Apr 2012

The 2001 Barolo San Giovanni is young. Here, too, the fairly high percentage of new oak (55-60%) has given the wine much of its textural richness, while the fruit remains very primary. Today there is little in the way of tertiary aromatic complexity. The 2001 remains a big, fruit-driven Barolo that could use another few years in bottle.

I was very impressed with Gianfranco Alessandria’s 2001 Baroli. Both wines have aged well. Importer: T. Edward Wines, New York, NY; tel. (212) 233-1504

The outrageous, massively endowed 2001 Barolo San Giovanni displays a darker shade of ruby along with nose of toasted oak, spices and vanilla. As the wine sits in the glass layers of ripe dark fruit, menthol and minerals emerge on an ample, broad frame with tremendous sustain, closing with a blast of tar on the superbly long finish. It is an outstanding effort. Made from significantly lower yields than the normale and aged in 70% new barriques versus 25% for the normale.
