Tasting notes
The 2017 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Colombis kicks off with fragrant licorice, dried red fruits, crushed flowers and tobacco notes. Markedly concentrated, the full-throttle 2017 is framed by firm tannins. Were it not for the slight trace of heat on the powerful and persistent finish, I’d score it a little higher.

Lurid ruby. Intensely perfumed raspberry, boysenberry, potpourri and incense aromas show fine detail and pick up smoky mineral and exotic spice flourishes with air. Palate-staining red/blue fruit, spicecake, candied lavender and cola flavors convey a suave blend of depth and energy. The floral and red fruit notes echo on the strikingly long, penetrating finish, which is framed by steadily building, polished tannins.
Glistening magenta. A complex, highly perfumed bouquet evokes ripe red and blue fruits, potpourri and incense, along with smoky mineral and exotic spice topnotes. Sweet and expansive on the palate, offering deeply concentrated yet surprisingly energetic boysenberry, Chambord, floral pastille and spicecake flavors that slowly tighten up on the back half. The strikingly long, floral- and spice-driven finish shows superb delineation and fine-grained, harmonious tannins.
