Score 89/100 · Drink 2017-2021, Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, Apr 2017

(from a 750-ml. bottle): Dullish red, with considerable browning. Totally evolved bouquet of musky plum, mocha, cedar and truffley underbrush. Fully evolved but the wine's sappy concentration gives it good inner-mouth tension and grip. Offers enticing easygoing sweetness, complex inner-mouth earthy perfume and very good length. This is fully open now but will still keep for a while. Laurent Lignier noted that his late brother Romain was using more new oak back in 2001--probably about 50% for this wine.

Dark red. Flamboyant aromas of currant, smoke, roasted nuts, beefsteak tomato and underbrush; very Morey-Saint-Denis. Then impressively round, supple and full for the vintage, with fresh red fruit flavors and harmonious acidity. Not particularly sweet but rich for the year. Finishes with round, ripe tannins and excellent length.

The ruby-colored 2001 Morey-St.-Denis 1er Cru Vieilles Vignes boasts a delightfully expressive nose of plummy, candied cherries. Broad, exhibiting excellent to outstanding depth of fruit, as well as loads of black cherries, this wine is medium-bodied and silky-textured. Projected maturity: now-2008. Full ruby-red. Black raspberry, brown spices and a peppery nuance on the pure nose. Sweet and spicy, with dark berry flavors nicely framed by harmonious acidity. A firm, structured, very persistent wine with tannins a bit more thoroughly buffered than those of the Riotte. Quite complex on the back end.
