Score 93/100 · Drink 2024-2032, Erin Larkin, Wine Advocate, Nov 2024

The 2022 Dry Red No 2 is composed of 96% Shiraz, 2% Marsanne, 1.5% Mataro and 0.5% Viognier. The fruit was handpicked, sorted and destemmed, then fermented in half-tonne open fermenters. A small portion of fermenters had frozen Viognier skins added to the bottom, while others had the inclusion of Marsanne bunches. It matured for 15 months in 25% new French oak barriques. So, to the wine. It leads aromatically with succulent, chewy red fruits and exotic pan-fried spices of clove, star anise and the like, with an array of dried herbs and pressed flowers in the frame. The palate is lean and pretty, with an abundance of fruit that is countered by dried mint, some gentle green leafiness and an assemblage of spices. The tannins and oak are as one and mostly seamless within the wine. Very impressive. 13.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap.
