Score 94/100 · James Suckling, Jan 2019

This really pushes the envelope on ripeness and extraction, but manages to pull it off, thanks to the bright acidity and enormous vitality of the crushed-berry flavors. Long, rather firm finish. From organically grown grapes. Better from 2020.

The 2016 Bernateau is bold, ripe and fruity, which makes it a good choice for drinking now and over the next few years. Super-ripe red cherry, plum, rose petal, mint and cinnamon are nicely pushed forward in this succulent Saint-Émilion. The 2016 is not especially complex, but it is quite tasty.

Super-ripe dark cherry, plum, mocha and sweet floral notes infuse the 2016 Bernateau. Forward and juicy, with no hard edges and plenty of juiciness, it offers plenty of near- and medium-term appeal.

The 2016 Bernateau felt way too overdone on the prune-like nose, whilst the palate is better with sweet, slightly cloying blue fruit, although at least there is a sense of harmony on the finish. This could have been better.
