Tasting notes
Moderately saturated medium red. Sexy, soil-inflected perfume of red berries, underbrush, dried flowers and leather, with some complementary oak tones. Supple, spicy and somewhat high-toned, with a restrained sweetness to the perfumed, rather wild flavors of raspberry, leather and underbrush. The leathery nuance carries through on the finish, which shows the strong tannic spine and firm acids of 2006.

The 2006 Brunello di Montalcino Franci is darker, richer and more substantial in style than the regular bottling, but I am not sure it is or will be a more pleasurable wine. Black cherries, grilled herbs, menthol, licorice and leather take shape as this powerful, burly Brunello reveals its powerful personality. The Franci should be at its best in a few years, once the French oak has softened a bit.
