Mid-crimson. Pronounced mulch flavours. Good, serious, dry fruit. Lively with lift and yet fruity with a certain tannic charge underneath though not one of these wines with the longest life. (JR)

The 1998 Brunello di Montalcino is a worthy effort. Its deep ruby/garnet color is followed by a sweet bouquet of smoke, scorched earth, plums, cherries, spice box, and tobacco. Long and dense, with soft tannin, ripe fruit, and a forward, evolved style (typical of the 1998 Brunellos), it will drink well for 8-10 years. Good full red. Aromatic nose combines black raspberry, strawberry, currant, tobacco, coffee and nutty oak, with complicating notes of leather and underbrush. Sweet, dense and fat, with nicely concentrated flavors of strawberry and currant framed by harmonious acidity. An elegant, traditionally styled Brunello that finishes with broad, dusty tannins and noteworthy length.
