Score 90+/100 · Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, May 2004

(from five-year-old vines) Saturated bright ruby. Captivating, complex nose combines blackberry, blueberry, black cherry, cassis, bitter chocolate, licorice and violet. Dense but clenched today, with an almost gritty, peppery quality that calls out for several years of patience. But this very tightly wound wine is also sharply delineated, intensely flavored and very persistent on the palate. May ultimately merit a higher score. This is clearly an excellent site for this variety.

Score 92-95/100 · Drink 2011-2030, Robert Parker, Dec 2003

There are 250 cases of the 2002 Petite Syrah Estate (14% alcohol). Made from cuttings taken from the Hayne Vineyard, this fabulous effort is one of the finest examples of this varietal I have recently tasted. Inky/blue/black/purple-colored to the rim, with a stunning bouquet of creosote, melted licorice, celestial black fruits, espresso roast, and white chocolate, this enormously-endowed wine possesses surprisingly ripe tannin. As it sits in the glass, violet and acacia flower-like scents also emerge. It has huge structure, but is oh, so backward. Do not touch a bottle for 8-9 years unless you want to do a roto rooter job on your upper GI tract. Fabulous! Anticipated maturity: 2011-2030+. NOTE: This is an estimated price per bottle. Tel.
