Tasting notes
Dark ruby. The 2000 Barolo is very representative of the vintage. It offers rich sensations of sweet toasted oak, spices, tobacco and licorice along with a lovely core of ripe fruit on a medium-bodied frame. Though accessible today it will be even better in a few years once some of the baby fat has dropped off and it should drink well to age 15.

This is only the second Barolo from young Sara Saffirio who is now running the estate founded by her mother in the mid-1980s (and whose vineyards were then rented by Luciano Sandrone). Her hand appears to be surer here than in 1999, particularly in the more discrete and nuanced handling of the oak, and the wine is better for it. This 2000 Barolo, a healthy garnet/ruby in color, features expansive aromas of tar, leather, roses and vanilla, and a dense, substantial palate whose chewy tannins and lengthy flavors should assure much pleasure between 2005 and 2018.
