The 1993 Clape Cornas is ready to drink, displaying gently sweet cherry and black raspberry flavors and an exotic touch of blood orange that sharpens the back half. A touch of olive reminds you that this is Syrah, as does a late candied violet flourish. A slight tartness suggests that the wine’s fruit is starting to fade while its backbone of acidity is still holding firm. A hint of smokiness comes up on the zesty, persistent and penetrating finish, which betrays just a hint of fine-grained tannins. I’d drink up.

The master of Cornas, Monsieur Clape, has turned out average quality 1993s that reveal good color, as well as a hardness and hollowness, no doubt because of the miserable weather conditions experienced before and during the harvest. The 1993 Cornas possesses more character and a denser color than the Cotes du Rhone, but once again the shortage of fruit, glycerin, and a mid-palate result in a straightforward tasting wine.
