Score 93/100 · Drink 2026-2037, Angus Hughson, Vinous, Sep 2022

The 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon John Riddoch is a dense and highly expressive wine with a distinctly savoury heart. There is a ripe core of dark berry fruits in the form of blackberry and blackcurrants against a strong ferrous/gravelly backdrop. An attractive combination of sweet fruit in a full-bodied package is supported by grainy tannins that are well composed and balanced to provide a strong finish.

The wine spent 21 months in 52% new French oak, 20% new American oak and 28% in two-year-old French oak. TA 6.8 g/l, pH 3.53. Black as black. Rich and perfumed and peppery. Much tighter on the palate. Fine but very firm linear sort of tannins. Firm and dry and long. Needs more time. (JH)

The 2005 John Riddoch Cabernet Sauvignon is the winery flagship sourced from estate grown fruit. It spent 21 months in 52% new French oak, 20% new American oak, and the balance in two-year-old French oak. Opaque purple-colored, the wine offers up an aromatic array, of pain grille, violets, cassis, black currant, and a hint of mint. This leads to a medium-bodied, supple-textured wine with good depth, flavors of plum and cassis, and enough ripe tannin to evolve for 4-6 years. Nicely balanced with a long, fruit-filled finish, the wine will drink well from 2012 to 2025. Importer: Foster Wine Estates Americas, Napa, CA; tel. (707) 259-4500
