The 2010 Mazoyères-Chambertin Grand Cru is one of the finest examples from this domaine in recent years. The spellbinding nose features brambly red fruit, red currant and cranberry, plus a touch of autumn leaves and a light ferrous tang in the background. There is superb focus and delineation here. The palate is medium-bodied and incredibly precise, and it delivers a crescendo that I cannot find in any other vintage. The key word here is “energy” -- coiled up, spring-like, on a finish that should guarantee its longevity. Brilliant.

The 2010 Mazoyères-Chambertin boasts a haunting, impossibly elegant bouquet. Hints of dark cherry, espresso, licorice and spice develop in the glass, adding considerable depth but no weight whatsoever. The Mazoyères remains light on its feet and impeccably refined. Sweet, candied notes resonate on the finish. Ultimately the Mazoyères is all about textural finesse, and there is no shortage of that here.

Romain Taupenot lost between 25-40% of his 2010 production to the poor weather, although some of his lower lying parcels were down as much as 80%. Fortunately the Grand Crus were down only 15% on average. The harvest began on September 23. Taupenot reported that the fruit required some sorting in the winery. 0.86 ha. Dark crimson. Very majestic nose. Not simple sweetness but just lovely density and concentration but also great balance. Dances and shows no excess of anything. Very sweet but also very firm. But not tough or drying in any way – despite the obvious register of tannins here. Bravissimo! (JR)
