Tasted at the Latour-à-Pomerol vertical in London. The 1929 Latour-à-Pomerol had a fragrant bouquet, a little earthiness, smoke and black truffle, hints of chlorine like the 1937, rustic but quite sensual. The palate is fresh and crisp, a small bead of acidity here, showing no signs of volatility and not a million miles away from an old Burgundy Pinot Noir, towards what I feel what once upon a time must have been a fleshy finish. It does not nail you to the floor, however, it has survived over decades and 86 years later, can still give a modicum of drinking pleasure. Yet based on this showing, it is probably more suited for a museum than a wine cellar. The question mark indicates that if I ever encounter this 1929 again, it might be totally different. Tasted December 2015.

The 1929 Latour-à-Pomerol is probably not a pristine bottle, but the general consensus is that it was not fake. The bouquet has a distinct tertiary quality, with traces of bonfire and black truffle, borrowing some of the swimming pool/chlorine notes from other old vintages. This is rustic but not unattractive. The palate retains freshness from the acidity. Evidently, this once was a fleshy Pomerol with a Burgundy-like texture. This is a survivor more than anything else. The bottom line is it is more of interest than pleasure now. I would love to taste a pristine bottle, but they are unlikely to exist. Tasted at the Latour à Pomerol dinner at Taillevent in London.
