The 2005 Champagne Grand Cru LV 1522 Extra Brut comes from a warm vintage, but not as warm and dry as 2015. Pouring a straw yellow hue, it offers a fabulous bouquet of mature yet fresh notes of custard, and while the lees add hints of porcini, the producers are aiming for notes of chocolate – chocolate-covered cherries, orange peels. Nevertheless, this full-bodied wine fills the palate and has a delicate, refined, pillowy creamy mousse. Its a remarkable wine to enjoy over the next 15 or more years, although I already really like it now. It’s rounder than the Clos de Goisses and lingers long on the palate. Disgorged in March 2025, it’s scheduled to be shipped in 2026.

The 2005 Brut Cuvée 1522 is racy and open-knit in style, with plenty of up-front appeal. Partial vinification in oak gives the wine an extra bit of exuberance and softness that renders the wine extremely pleasing today. Dried flowers, red stone fruits, smoke and a hint of vanilla are laced into the creamy, expressive finish. The 2005 is 60% Pinot Noir from Aÿ, Verzy, Sillery and Mailly, and 40% Chardonnay from Oger. Disgorged November 2014.

Bright gold. Deeply pitched orchard and pit fruits on the nose, with subtle toasted nut and spice notes and a touch of sea salt. Broad and concentrated, offering mineral-accented pear and gingerbread flavors and a hint of anise. Weighty, full and long on the smoky finish, with an echoing pit fruit note. Disgorged in December, 2013.

Pastry, spices, dried pear and crushed flowers are some of the many notes that grace the palate in the 2005 1522. A wine of texture and nuance, the 1522 impresses for its open, caressing and radiant personality. My sense is that the 2005 is best enjoyed sooner rather than later.
