Tasted blind at the Burgfest annual tasting, Louis Michel's 2014 Chablis 1er Cru Butteaux had a very solid showing among its peers. It has a vibrant, slightly minty, fennel-tinged bouquet that does not hold back. It really blossoms in the glass although it never quite delivers the mineral expression. However, the palate is fresh and vibrant on the entry with mandarin and tangerine notes, a pleasant saline touch lingering on the finish, whereupon you immediately feel the urge to take another sip. Recommended.

Pale yellow. Very tight nose hints at flowers; unusually classy for this wine, which is typically a bit more rustic and earthy than the more minerally, iodiney Montmains. Then broad and lively in the mouth, showing sound acidity (4.5 grams per liter according to Guillaume Gicqueau-Michel) and a tactile, lightly tannic finish.
Pale yellow. Bright on the nose but showing more smoke and earth today than primary fruits or flowers. Fairly broad and full in the mouth but a bit unrefined. Has the structure to support mid-term aging but this saline, slightly harsh wine will need at least a few years of patience. The saline finish features good phenolic thrust.
