The 1993 Tokaji Betsek 6-Puttonyos, which has 231g/L residual sugar and 11 g/L acidity, has a very appealing bouquet of dried quince, beeswax, grilled walnuts and just a faint hint of furniture polish. This is well defined and gains intensity in the glass. The palate is fresh and lively on the entry and viscous in texture, offering quince, marmalade and a touch of spice toward the harmonious and persistent finish. Graceful and pure and aging beautifully. Tasted at the Royal Tokaji Company tasting in London.

RS 231 g/l, TA 11 g/l. First growth. Potent and perfumed – lovely floral character here, as well as citrus, apricot and treacle. Very intense core fruit – this feels like it has a long journey ahead of it. Perhaps less immediate that the Nyulászó 1993, but no less complex. (RH)

Aromas of plums, prunes, black tea, game and sweet lily flower. (This is 50% hárslevelo.) Almost shockingly bright on entry. Loads the mouth with citrus, honey and pitted as well as tiny black fruits. Creamy, rich and smoky. Truly thick and dripping with glycerine, yet ultra-bright. Utterly remarkable wine which I realize, as I transcribe my note, has left me with one of the most distinct and vivid impressions of any wine I tasted. I am at a loss to explain why it happens to cost less than the Tamás or Nyulászo. As a check on my impression, I asked Turíczi how he feels about the wine and he concurred: "I'm a bit surprised, but today this seems to be showing best." There were three additional single-vineyard bottlings in the 1993 vintage as well as an Aszú Eszencia.
