Score 88/100 · Drink 2019-2022, Monica Larner, Wine Advocate, May 2019

There are some interesting balsamic notes hidden in the 2007 Caiarossa, which has gone through quite an evolution. Compared to the other vintages, however, it is unfortunately flat, and that has brought down this score. This is a blend of Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Syrah and Alicante, and many of the vines were quite young at the time of harvest (about eight years old).

Blend of biodynamically farmed 25% Cabernet Franc, 24% Merlot, 16% Sangiovese, 14% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Petitt Verdot, 7% Alicante and 6% Syrah. A little water stress during the hot summer. Bright ruby. Big-boned and rich – less distinctive than the 2006 – more mainstream. Tannins are pretty well melded – but the overall impression is of a vigorous and assertive wine. Just a little dry on the end. (JR)

Coastal Maremma property acquired by the Belgian owner of Chx Giscours and du Tertre in 2004, with wines imported into the UK by Berry Bros. Biodynamic. This is their top bottling made up of what they see as the best grapes of the year. Almost half the 2007 blend is equal parts of Cabernet Franc and Merlot with 16% Sangiovese, 14% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Petit Verdot, 6% Syrah and 7% Alicante. Perhaps it is not surprising that it does not seem to have an especially strong personality. Obviously very ripe grapes but a rather occluded impression at the moment. Vines were planted in 1999 and 2000. The property may come into its own as the vines age. (JR)
