Dark and luscious, the 2012 Barbera d'Alba Scarrone Vigna Vecchia is a stunning interpretation of this popular grape. The wine is aged in both barrique and botte grande for up to 18 months. It presents dark fruit layers with added spice, leather, tobacco and Spanish cedar. It bursts open with bold intensity and an enriched style.

This old-vine Barbera always shows soul and finesse. The 2012 is a little more toned-down than usual but it shows so much terracotta, dark-fruit and chocolate character. It\'s full and firm with chewy tannins and a fresh finish. Drink or hold.

Vietti's 2012 Barbera d'Alba Scarrone Vigna Vecchia is all about texture. Layers of dark red cherry, plum, smoke, licorice and menthol all open up in the glass. The Vigna Vecchia is richer, deeper and more explosive than the Scarrone, but as has been the case now for some time, the differences between the two Scarrone Barberas aren't as marked as they once were. This is a rare Barbera I would be tempted to cellar. Vintages from the 1990s are still gorgeous.
