The 2016 Block 1 has a bold and expressive nose with a focused tone of dusty blackberry and dusty plum blossom on the nose, with hints of baked earth and layered oak essence. Medium to full-bodied, oak spices show up first on the palate followed by a bold berry-laced tone, with good mineral tension and firm tannic grip adding complexity. The wine lingers softly with tart fruit expressions and subtle notions of graphite that continue to evolve on the precise, focused and complex finish. Only 600 cases made. Wow, I’m impressed.

Full red-ruby. Deep, oaky aromas of plum, redcurrant, beefsteak tomato, graphite, mocha, herbs and licorice. A plush, glossy, sweet midweight with good framing acidity and cooling notes of violet and menthol to its dark berry and tobacco leaf flavors. Finishes with substantial dusty tannins--but no rough edges--to support mid-term aging. A bit less chocolatey-sweet than the 2015 version, this wine will probably be even better with a couple years of patience--and better still for fans of heavily oaked Cabernets. These Cabernets all spent between 30 and 32 months in barrel, but this wine was the only one to get 100% new oak.
Reminding me of a top Pauillac (or Saint Estephe?), the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Block 1 comes all from the estate vineyard and was raised in new oak. It has a deep, rich, black fruited style as well as classic notes of roasted herbs, green tobacco, coffee beans, lead pencil, and hints of sage brush. Full-bodied, concentrated, with ripe tannins and good acidity, it stays nicely balanced on the palate and opens up beautifully with air. It benefits from a decant if drinking anytime soon and is going to benefit from 2-4 years of bottle age and last for 15-20 years.
