(14.1%; 50% new oak): Highly complex nose offers aromas of blackberry, black raspberry, spices, espresso and bitter chocolate lifted by a floral topnote. Wonderfully intense, fine-grained, silky wine with enticing sweetness but also a juicy impression of energy to its berry, spice and light torrefaction flavors. Finishes with serious but ripe, harmonious tannins and excellent length. This expansive wine already offers outstanding appeal but it has the material and balance to age. Incidentally, this wine and the Frederick are Spring Valley's most important bottlings, with about 3,000 cases of each produced.

The 2013 Uriah is another wine that’s good, yet comes in behind other recent vintages. Made from 45% Merlot, 34% Cabernet Franc, 8% Petit Verdot and the rest Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon, this medium-bodied, charming, open knit and nicely textured 2013 has moderate mid-palate depth, notes of currants, cherries, savory spice and dried herbs, ripe tannin, and a good finish. Drink bottle through 2023.
