The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Fission is terrific, with classic Cabernet cassis and darker currant fruits as well as lots of minerality, lead pencil, and tobacco-like aromas and flavors. I love its purity of fruit, and it has fine yet present tannins, terrific balance, and a great finish. This gorgeous Sonoma Cabernet Sauvignon will evolve for at least 15 years.

Full bottle 1,460 g. Based on the 50-year-old, dry-farmed vines of Alta Vista vineyard on St George rootstock grown on a base of basalt and granite. Gently infused almost rather than macerated and aged in barrels that are only 27% new and for one year only. Deep purplish crimson. Intense savoury/herbal nose with a hint of bergamot. Not overdone, not overripe, complete and reasonably refreshing – hooray! Though the tannins are almost negligible. This is probably not a wine for the long term but it's already accessible. (JR)

The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Fission emerges from Alta Vista, on Moon Mountain. A dark, potent wine, the 2019 captures plenty of mountain energy in its savory, earthy flavor profile. Dark cherry, mocha, spice, new leather, licorice and chocolate all flesh out. My impression is that less new oak and longer élevage might bring out even more character. This is certainly an impressive debut from Mai Errazuriz and Rodrigo Soto.

Established in 2018, this exciting project in Sonoma Valley’s Moon Mountain District was crated by Rodrigo Soto and his wife Mai Errazuriz. The wines are made with an old-school Napa sensibility and have rapidly garnered critical acclaim and global attention. This is undoubtedly a name to watch.
