Score 97/100 · Drink 2025-2045, Erin Brooks, Wine Advocate, Oct 2024

The 2021 Pinot Noir Silver Eagle Vineyard was fermented with 45% whole clusters and matured in used oak. It’s extraordinarily complex and expressive with a woodsy, heady character reminiscent of Nebbiolo. After initial wafts of struck flint, it releases scents of wild red and black berries, bergamot, bitters, mixed tea leaves and rose petals. The palate is just as arresting, unfurling pure fruit, earth and spice layers. It’s structured by silky tannins and bright acidity and has a tremendously long, expressive finish.

The 2021 Pinot Noir Silver Eagle Vineyard saw 45% whole clusters and comes from a suitcase selection clone of Pinot Noir believed to be from Vosne-Romanée. In the glass, it reveals a deeper ruby color, and its more sanguine profile comes through on the nose with notes of orange peel, crushed stones, ripe raspberries, and layered spices. The palate offers a chiseled feel, with noble, ripe tannins, seamless acidity, and an exceptionally balanced, long finish. This is an outstanding wine in this fantastic vintage, and it’s only going to improve with time in cellar. Drink 2026-2040.

Black cherries, copper pennies and dark plums. Full-bodied with incredible depth. It also has some mint and moss notes. Creamy, firm tannins with a flavorful and spicy finish. Such purity and depth to this. A combination of lower alcohol with excellent phenolic ripeness. 45% whole cluster. Vosne Romanee clone. Hard not to drink now but will age for years to come.

The 2021 Pinot Noir Silver Eagle Vineyard is wonderfully classy and elegant. Rose petal, lavender, bright red-toned fruit and a kiss of French oak fill out the layers. The 2021 offers a super-appealing mix of textural resonance and energy. Silky contours wrap it all together. It is one of the more restrained Pinots I have tasted from Matt Courtney.
