The 2022 Pinot Noir Pisoni Vineyard exudes the power and ripeness that one can expect from this site, albeit delivered with a lovely clarity and energy that make for an overall balanced expression. The nose displays its typically dark-fruited anise aromas with a radiance that adds a red-fruited energy to the mix. The palate is velvety, intense and beautifully precise, concluding with a taut, structured finish that exudes continuously escalating intensity. This is quite inward at this stage, and I suspect it will improve measurably after another year or two.

Lastly of the single vineyard releases from the Santa Lucia Highlands, the 2022 Pinot Noir Pisoni Vineyard comes from a great site of more granitic soils located at the southern end of the Santa Lucia Highlands. This is further away from Monterey Bay, meaning the fog burns off more quickly, and the site sees more sunshine and slightly warmer temperatures. This deeper ruby-hued effort has a classic Pisoni nose of darker berries, cassis, scorched earth, and violets that turns slightly more red-fruited and floral with time in the glass. Possessing medium to full-bodied richness, it has a focused, elegant mouthfeel, plenty of ripe, polished tannins, and integrated acidity. It's one of the more age-worthy 2022s in the vintage and is going to benefit from just a year or two in the cellar (I love it today with a decant) and have a solid 10+ years of prime drinking.

The 2022 Pinot Noir Pisoni Vineyard is dark, powerful and mysterious—all the hallmarks one would expect from a young wine from this pedigreed site. Layers of black raspberry, sweet lavender, salted black licorice, incense and cracked black pepper introduce a Pinot Noir of utter class. Muscular but finessed, everything is in its right place. This is so beautiful and plush. Ultra-fine tannins lend structure, finishing with an exotic air of star anise. The Pisoni feels a little somber today—give it a year or two in bottle to truly express itself.
