Juvenile is sourced from a variety of younger vines that have been planted in several old-vine sites. The vines range in age from about 6 to 25 years, planted in vineyards across California, including Hayne, Pesenti, Salvador, Vineyard 101, Fredericks and Kirschenmann. Ambient-yeast fermentation. Aged for 12 months in oak barrels 95% used, 5% new (80% French oak, 20% American). Rich and sweet. Polished tannins and with lots of vibrant life. A bit of alcohol on the end. (JR)

Blocked malolactic conversion. Half crushed, half whole cluster. Fermented in stainless steel before maturing in neutral French oak barrels. Deep pink in colour. What I imagine eating a blueberry bush would taste like – fruit alongside the brambly herbal quality of the leaves and then with the added salt and crunchy, toasty quality of pie crust and a touch of stemmy thyme. Fresh acidity but very broad textured and weighty – like heavy cream. Ramato style with lots of chew – could definitely keep a few years. (SCJ)

The 2023 Zinfandel Juvenile is bold, juicy and super-expressive, all of which make it a fine choice for drinking now and over the next handful of years. Bright red/purplish fruit, lavender, spice and new leather build nicely in this tasty, mid-weight offering from Turley.
