Tasting notes
(bottled in magnums; aged for two years in 30% new barriques): Bright, deep saturated red. Primary aromas of black cherry, licorice, menthol and violet. Boasts uncanny sweetness and density, with fresh acidity giving the wine lovely inner-mouth tension and a firm structure. In a powerful, virile style, finishing with a whiplash of dark fruits and flowers. Voerzio farms his barbera like his nebbiolo vines. They're planted at very high density (up to 8,000 plants per hectare), and each vine ultimately yields between 500 and 700 grams of fruit. Incidentally, there is no 2009 Pozzo as the wine couldn't finish its fermentation.

Roberto Voerzio's 2008 Barbera d'Alba Riserva Vigneto Pozzo dell'Annunziata is a fascinating wine. Much more fragrant and perfumed than it typically is, the 2008 impresses for its subtle, gracious personality and pure silkiness. Dark red cherry and plum notes open up in the glass, followed by spices, new leather and a hint of tar. The flavors are still quite primary, so the 2008 needs time in the glass to fully develop, but it isn't a huge wine, rather the 2008 is a Barbera that impresses for its elegance and pure finesse.
Vorezio offers new perspective on one of Piedmont’s most popular red grapes. The 2008 Barbera d’Alba Riserva Vigneto Pozzo dell’Annunziata (tasted in a magnum) delivers impressive sophistication to Barbera. Careful barrel aging has shaped aromas of bacon fat, smoke, underbrush, rum cake and bitter chocolate. The wine shows impeccable smoothness and elegance in the mouth, with a spicy acidic accent that will appeal to die-hard Barbera enthusiasts. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2022. The wines of Roberto and Davide Voerzio offer a fitting conclusion to this tasting of Piedmont’s best red wines. These are stunning wines that capture, head on, the beauty of the 2009 vintage. They remind us of the dazzling heights achieved by the Nebbiolo grape. Importer: Winebow, Pinebrook, NJ; tel. (201) 445-0620
