Tasting notes
The 2010 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Colombis opens with pronounced notes of forest floor, melted licorice, cigar box, cedar, black cherry compote and a flicker of raisin. Bordering overripeness, this powerful red Châteauneuf is clearly from another era, focusing more on power and concentration than elegance and finesse. Later harvesting, no whole clusters during fermentation and a little bit of new oak highlight the main differences between the approach in 2010 and now. Nonetheless, the 2010 is a tasty, hedonistic treat at the start of its broad drinking window.

From a bottle purchased on release, the 2010 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Colombis from Madame Ferrando is a total rock star and comes close to topping out the scale. Boasting a still youthful ruby/purple-tinged color as well as an awesome display of kirsch liqueur, black licorice, ground pepper, and cured meats, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a deep, layered, powerful texture, and a finish that goes on for nearly a minute. Despite all its richness and power, like all great wines, it stays balanced, pure, and weightless. It’s a heavenly bottle of wine and a monumental Grenache!
