Score 94/100 · Drink 2016-2028, Robert Parker, Mar 2016

More feminine, but richer than the 2013 version, the 2014 Zinfandel Vellutini Ranch (16.6% alcohol) exhibits deep black raspberry fruit, white chocolate, earth, underbrush and a touch of barrique. It is the second smallest cuvée in 2014, having produced only 182 cases. Drink it over the next 10-12 years. Both Jackass cuvées were produced in 2014.

Exotic and flamboyant to the core, the 2014 Zinfandel Vellutini Ranch hits the palate with over-ripe black cherry, lavender, dark spice, licorice, crème de cassis and menthol, all with an extra kick of intensity from the elevated and noticeable alcohol. For my palate, the Vellutini Ranch is a bit over the top, but I have no doubt some readers will find more pleasure in this style than I do.

Martinelli

Martinelli is a Sonoma benchmark for vineyard-designate bottlings—wines built to highlight how strongly a single site can shape Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Syrah, and Zinfandel. Across the range, the focus stays consistent: small-production bottlings that feel distinctly tied to where they’re grown.
