Tasting notes
(from the estate's "most structured and powerful vineyard site"): Full ruby-red. Slightly porty high tones to the aromas of inky cassis, black cherry, menthol and nutty oak. Dense, juicy and penetrating, offering an enticing combination of sweetness and freshness. Has the intensity of flavor--and balance--to handle its firm, ripe tannins. The long finish features complex, expressive flavors of currant, tobacco and minerals. This is very good.

The estate's 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate La Presa One South is a bit ethereal and delicate in this vintage. Freshly cut flowers, violets, cinnamon, cloves and plums waft from the glass as this exceptionally elegant, perfumed Cabernet shows off its pedigree and class. Dark red cherries, flowers, mint and licorice all meld together on the expressive, delineated finish. The balance of fruit, acidity and tannin is fabulous. This is another great showing from Montagna.

Montagna is Bob Long’s new project on Pritchard Hill, not far from David Arthur, which Bob founded with his brother David. Nile Zacherle, the winemaker at David Arthur, is also in charge at Montagna. These early releases suggest Montagna is another of the rising stars in Napa’s hottest neighborhood. Tel. (707) 963-5190
