Impenetrable dark purple crimson. Concentration and depth of dark fruit underlined by pretty cigarbox notes. Open and concentrated on the nose, but the palate is less forthcoming. Elegant palate weight and prominent acidity, with just the right amount of oak. Compact slightly bitter tannins and built for ageing. Seriously good stuff, if a tad international. Would love to see what degli Dei can do with Sangiovese only. (WS)

The 2010 Tenuta degli Dei is the best wine I have tasted from Tommaso Cavalli. Vibrant, nuanced and wonderfully crystalline in the glass, the 2010 is compelling. Violets, lavender, graphite and plum notes flow into menthol, pine and cloves as the 2010 shows off its personality. Today, the 2010 is positively explosive. The inherent richness of these international grapes grown in Panzano is beautifully complemented by the underlying tension and minerality of the vintage. The 2010 is 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Petit Verdot and 15% Cabernet Franc, aged in French oak barrels, 50% new.

Compared to the sober packaging of Le Redini, the 2010 Cavalli boasts a few design touches that evoke the catwalk feel of father Cavalli. Even the inside of the bottle reveals some of the Rococo aesthetic of the famous fashion designer. This is an extremely opulent, thickly concentrated blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (60%), Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc that peels back layer after thick layer. Sun-ripened berry, blackberry preserves, spice, cardamom, rum cake, leather and moist chewing tobacco all vie for your attention. Although it’s definitely on the ripe side, the great quality of fruit in 2010 shapes a soft, long-lasting feel in the mouth. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2020. Tenuta degli Dei is located in Panzano in Chianti and is run by Tommaso Cavalli, son of eccentric fashion designer Roberto Cavalli. The tiny winery is located in the basement of a country church. Unexpected as it may seem, Tommaso is a shy and hands-on guy who does everything in the winery himself. Although he doesn’t make a Chianti Classico, he is mulling over the possibility of doing so in the future. Importers: Sherbrooke Cellars; www.sherbrookcellars.com; Francoli USA; www.francoliusa.com
