The 2014 Columbia Valley Syrah opens in the glass with youthfully reticent notes of berry liqueur, blackberries and dark chocolate. On the palate, it's rich, full-bodied and lavish on the attack, with a sweet core of fruit, low acidity and a chewy finish. This is an unabashedly ripe Syrah that shows some alcoholic heat.

The 2014 Syrah Columbia Valley from Corliss is a blend of Syrah that was co-fermented with a tiny amount of Viognier. Deep, inky-colored with a huge nose of blackcurrants, charcoal, chocolate, and graphite, this puppy hits the palate with a full-bodied, unctuous, powerful style that stays nicely balanced and pure. It's a big, rich, modern styled effort that has tons to love. Drink it anytime over the coming decade.
(14.9% alcohol; aged in 40% new oak for 26 months; about 25% of this wine was vinified in concrete eggs with whole clusters, which winemaker Andrew Trio says keeps the fermentation temperature lower): Bright ruby-red. Complex aromas of dark berries, spices, espresso and rock are complemented by a smoked meat note. At once dense and nicely delineated, offering lovely inner-mouth energy to the flavors of black fruits, smoke and cocoa powder. Finishes with building, palate-saturating silky tannins, hints of spearmint and charcoal, and excellent length.
