Tasting notes
The inkiest and richest of the lineup, the 2010 Syrah Behind the Black Curtain Reserve is 100% Syrah that comes from the Klipsun vineyard on Red Mountain. Spending 21 months in 100% new French oak, it is a big, concentrated and exceedingly rich effort that has the essence of blackberry-styled fruit, violets, licorice, charred earth and liquid flower all soaring from the glass. Full-bodied, concentrated and yet also fresh and lively, it opens up nicely in the glass and has remarkable balance and purity for such a big wine. I suggest drinking it over the coming 5-8 years, yet it could have an interesting evolution beyond that as well. Drink now-2018. These full throttle wines are made by Chris Gorman and focus primarily on Red Mountain fruit. They’re unabashedly full-bodied and ripe, and while not for the anti-alcohol crowd, deliver serious amounts of fruit and texture while staying fresh and very drinkable. www.gormanwinery.com
