Made from 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Cabernet Franc, 7% Merlot and the rest Petit Verdot, the 2014 The Dissident was raised all in new French oak. It offers a beautiful bouquet of cassis, plums, wood smoke and scorched earth. Medium to full-bodied, pure, polished and a touch squeaky clean, it has fine tannin and a good finish.

(54% new French oak; a lot of younger-vines fruit goes into this less expensive bottling, which was originally a Cabernet-Syrah blend but has become more complicated in recent years): Bright ruby-red. Black cherry, black pepper and bitter chocolate aromas are lifted by high notes of violet and rose petal. Precise and savory on the palate, with juicy, harmonious acidity enlivening the dark fruit and violet flavors. I particularly like the energy of this blend, which finishes with smooth tannins and noteworthy juicy persistence.
