Bright medium ruby. Raspberry and smoked meat aromas are complicated by a whiff of barrel char. Quite plump but also dry, with its raspberry fruit a bit muted by the oak element. I wanted more verve and definition here. Finishes with substantial tannins that avoid dryness.

From the Yakima Valley, the 2014 Syrah The Darkness is 100% Syrah and is amply named as it's an inky, deep, backward effort that has lots of blackberry, black olive, pepper and scorched earth. It opens up beautifully with time in the glass and despite the concentration and density, has beautiful purity and fine tannin. It's impressive. Give it year or two of bottle age and drink it over the coming decade.
