The 1999 Brunello di Montalcino needs a little extra time to find steady footing. It starts off slow, then speeds up in terms of its aromatic delivery, and slows down once again to maintain a steady pace. Once it does, the bouquet reaches good balance with some dried fruit backed by licorice and dark mineral. My only hesitation with this wine is the unyielding oak tannin that is dusty and firm. It seems unlikely to go away if it hasn’t already. Drink: 2014-2024.

Perhaps caught at a closed stage, the 1999 Brunello di Montalcino comes across as somewhat austere and clenched in its personality. It is a potent effort, displaying prominent notes of smoke, tar, scorched earth and sweet dark fruit on a full-bodied, if somewhat rustic frame. A few more years in the bottle may help smooth the edges. Anticipated maturity

Good ruby-red. Inviting aromas of currant, leather and smoky, nutty oak, plus a suggestion of berry liqueur. Dense, broad and backward, with extremely primary, medicinal berry flavors and an impression of brooding power. The clenched flavors are perked up by a note of blood orange. Finishes with building, youthfully tough tannins that call for a decade of patience.

Mid-crimson, though with a relatively weak rim. Sweet chestnut nose, though not especially intense. Very well-mannered and smooth. Solid, respectable, and firm. Only slightly lacking a vital spark. (JR)
