Bright purple. Aromas of dark berries, pungent flowers and smoky herbs, with a bright mineral overtone. At once fleshy and energetic, offering vibrant blackberry and bitter cherry flavors underscored by a crackling mineral element. Gains sweetness with air and finishes with excellent clarity, focus and length, leaving pure dark berry notes behind.

The Clos de la Roilette 2011 Fleurie Cuvee Tardive – representing, as usual, Coudert’s interpretation of this site from some of his oldest (octogenarian) vines and intended for longer cellaring than its stable mates – brims with ripe blackberry and elderberry underlain by wet stone and laced with pungent herbs and mouthwatering salinity. Firm but fine tannins signal the extra measure of structure that along with sheer abundance of fruit should see this bottling felicitously through at least 2017. Alain Coudert (consult my report in Issue 184 for more on Coudert and his estate, Clos de la Roilette) began picking on August 27 in 2011 and had finished already in the first week of September. This is stunning. Quite dark crimson. Unlike so much Beaujolais, it smells of really intense, ripe Gamay and has real (granitic?) bite. It's ridiculously gulpable already but clearly has a great future too. Not a hint of hasty fermentation. Freshness and fruitinss incarnate. Yum, yum, yum.   (JR)
