The 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon is quite similar to Claret in this vintage in that it shares that wine's extroverted, boisterous personality. Black fruit, mocha, tobacco, incense and sweet spices all add complexity. Sweet dark layered and pretty, this voluptuous Cabernet Sauvignon should drink well with minimum cellaring. There is a lot to like here, but the wine needs time to peak.

This year I thought the Syrahs were particularly of note. Yields have been down in the last few years because of a conversion back to cane pruning, but with 2011 yields are up to a bit higher than normal. The Dehlinger wines are beautiful, full of character and richly deserving of a broader audience. Tel. (707) 823-2378
Glass-staining ruby. Complex bouquet of dried cherry, licorice, potpourri and minerals, with a suave smoky accent. Very sweet and creamy in texture, offering intense dark fruit flavors that gain power and spiciness with air. Picks up notes of chewing tobacco and vanilla on the back end and finishes with excellent energy and lingering sweetness. (JR)
