Tasting notes
The 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Atlas is one of the most vibrant wines in this range of 2017s from Dakota Shy. Rose petal, mint, white flowers and pepper notes give the 2017 a striking floral and savory quality to play off a core of dense red cherry and pomegranate fruit. Incisive tannins give the wine focus and cut. There is a brilliance to the 2017 that I especially admire; this is such a gorgeous wine.

Deep purple-black colored, the 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Atlas opens a little medicinal giving way to baked black cherries, black currant pastilles, fried herbs and tar notes plus a waft of tobacco. The palate is medium to full-bodied with a solid backbone of chewy tannins and tart freshness slightly shrouding the delicate fruit in the mid-palate, finishing a tad abrupt.
The 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Atlas is a more than worthy follow up to the 2016. Rich and powerful in the glass, with a huge center of fruit and tremendous intensity, the Atlas captures all of the layers of nuance that make wines from Howell Mountain so deeply intriguing. Red fruit, iron, smoke tobacco and cedar build into the huge tannic finish. What a gorgeous wine this.
