Tasting notes
Readers in search of a hedonistic wine to sink their teeth into should look no further. Raphet's dark purple-colored 1997 Charmes-Chambertin is loaded with dark chocolate and cherry syrup aromas. This is a massively ripe, silky textured, medium to full-bodied wine that is fashioned in a sultry, sexy, opulent style. Candied red fruits, mocha, and kirsch liqueur can be detected in its oily character. Anticipated maturity: now-2006+. Importer: David Hinkle / Peter Vezan, North Berkeley Imports, Berkeley, CA; tel (800) 266-6585.

Good deep red. Higher-pitched bitter cherry, currant, vanilla and roasted nut aromas, plus floral and stony nuances. Juicy and intensely flavored, with lovely inner-mouth sweetness. Complicating notes of licorice, coffee and pepper. Finishes firm and fresh. A very suave, gently extracted Charmes with a lovely balance for the vintage.
